Revisiting the "Hebrew School" Model

© 2011, CAP IT, Inc.

What do all Hebrew schools have in common? Be they Orthodox, Conservative or Reform, there are certain elements they all share:

1. Children are happy to attend Hebrew School like they are happy to visit the dentist — Unless bribed sufficiently.
2. As much as 50% of the time is spent teaching children how to read Hebrew.

These two points are related: If an hour of every Sunday is spent learning how to read a foreign language, you too would be complaining.

What if we can teach children to read in just hours? What if we can enable kids attending Hebrew schools to read in just 16 hours of class time or less?

What we propose is a complete shift in the Hebrew School model, one that can only be done through the use of CAP IT! Hebrew Reading. Here is our proposition: No More Hebrew School! Let’s separate the Hebrew reading from all the other subjects, and have two separate programs:

1. Hebrew Reading Classes: Children learn to read in just hours of class time.
2. Judaism: Schools can now spend the entire time imbuing the kids with a sense of Jewish community and identity. Now time can be spent teaching kids to understand Hebrew, to read the blessings, to read from the Torah, and to prepare for their Bar and Bat Mitzvah.

In other words, instead of “Hebrew Schools”, we should have “Judaism Schools” (or whatever name we choose). These schools would make it a prerequisite that their pupils attend a Hebrew Class before, or in tandem with their other Jewish studies.

But this can only be done with a Hebrew reading curriculum that is fast and fun.
